GE General Electric announces it will discontinue incandescent light bulbs in favor of green lighting, such as CFL and LED.
In September of 2010 GE, General Electric, announced that it would close its last major US manufacturing plant making incandescent light bulbs. In 2007 Congress passed legislation requiring energy conservation measures that all but banned the sale of incandescent light bulbs in the USA. This is part of the new green initiatives the country is pursuing, along with solar lights.
But there are unintended consequences of the change in the way the USA approaches lighting. The most common replacement for incandescent light bulbs are CFL bulbs, a.k.a. Compact Florescent light bulbs. These bulbs are made using hand made techniques to twist the glass tubes. This type of manufacturing is labor intensive and is not competitive in the USA. Most are made in China where labor is much cheaper. CFL Light Bulbs are also not as green as the GoesGreenNetwork would like. Each lamp contains a small amount of mercury. If broken, they can contaminate your house. Additionally most people do not like the color of CFL Bulbs.
We strongly favor the push to LED lighting. Ultimately cheaper than CFL light bulbs, LED lighting uses the least electricity and can be manufactured in a wide variety of color temperature ranges. They also will last much longer than both CL and incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs also have the instant on feature of incandescent light bulbs, which CFL lights do not have. Dimming is much easier also with LED lamps. While not all current LED lamps can be dimmed, it is much easier to design the lamp for dimmer use. LED llights are perfect for solar flood lights.
We suggest converting directly to LED bulbs and bypassing the use of CFL light bulbs.
